Fall in the vineyard

It's been awhile, so hello again.

We awoke on October 7th to the most amazing sunrise, and as Julie describes it, the most beautiful day ever at Herons' House.

A lot has been going on recently.   On Friday October 5th, We had a very popular national TV channel/show at the house shooting all day. They were shooting Herons' House for the first episode of a new series for next season.  The show will air in June or July.  We are sworn to secrecy but are very excited that our home will be featured.

The opportunity came out of the blue, unsolicited,  with a message left on our answering machine.  Julie said "Honey, guess who called us this morning!"

October 3rd I spent the early part of the morning in Ramona harvesting Brunello grapes in the vineyard with three friends.  We harvested nearly a ton of grapes and split them among us.

Thus begins our second year of wine making. Last years Merlot and Cabernet Souv. are tremendous wines and this year we will be making 30 gallons of Brunello and 30 gals of Cabernet Souv for a total of 350 bottles.

Our vines have had a tremendous first year of growth, we pinched off the berries this year but we will have at least a partial crop next year thanks to the robust root development.  We did leave some clusters on our vines so that we could gauge the insect and powdery mildew  pressures.   The grapes did great and came to full ripeness.  The picture of the grape clusters is from our vineyard next to the cellar wall. 26 brix, ready to harvest.
